Overview
The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) in Nairobi, Kenya, assumed operations as the AfriGEO Secretariat in 2019.
RCMRD hosted the 4th AfriGEOSS Symposium from 12–16 August 2019, which was merged with the 3rd RCMRD International Conference under the theme:
“Earth Observation for Evidence-Based Decision Making.”
Key Outcomes
- Data accountability and transparency to enhance data utilization
- Operationalization of data to ensure reliable access for frequent users
- Incentives for data sharing to promote collaboration and open access
- Densification of in-situ data from sensors integrated with EO data
- Improved infrastructure for affordable and efficient data exchange through NRENs (National Research and Education Networks)
- Science-to-policy transition to ensure impactful decision-making
- Alignment of science and innovation to national development strategies
- Reinforced partnerships across countries, institutions, and private sector
- Encouragement for African ownership in innovation and technology leadership
